Central Texas Fires

It has been a quiet month in real estate partially due to the somber memories of 9/11 and the fires that have claimed a significant portion of the landscape over the past 2 weeks.   Here is a link to some ways you can help fire victims.  Many people living in remote areas like Bastrop, which has had over 35,000 acres burned, do not have hazard insurance.  In some cases, they have lost everything from smoke and fire damage.  There are many donaton drop of centers set up all over Austin to help collect supplies.

Hot Rods Hit SoCo

Last weekend, South Congress Avenue was once again transported back in time for the 10th Annual Lonestar Round Up.  The event brings visitors from all over world, and hot rods, classic and custom cars from all over the country.

The SoCo area in Austin, already exuding a 50’s vibe, becomes a hot spot as car enthusiasts line the streets to view the cars and take in some live music.

SoCo Real Estate Market

Let’s take a look around the SoCo area of South Congress, which will include the Travis Heights and Bouldin areas.

The picture shows a ½ mile radius setting Doc’s Bar & Grill and Jo’s in the middle.  There are currently 14 homes for sale.  Available houses for purchase in this area range in age from 90 years to newly built.  List prices range from a $299,000 for a tear down/needs TLC, to $717,500 for new construction.  Average time on the market, is currently 77 days.

I support local Austin, after all I think it’s only neighborly.

Livestrong Austin Marathon

All eyes were on Austin this weekend as 20,000 runners from all over the world came to participate in the 20th anniversary of the Livestrong Austin Marathon. The event is one of the largest in the country and pacers were available to qualify for the Boston Marathon which is set at 3 hours and 30 minutes. It’s a wonderful event and reminder of the health conscious city we live in.
The 26.2 mile course included historic and scenic areas of Austin like Congress Avenue, Hyde Park and the UT Campus.

The Spirit of 37th Street

Last night, I took a stroll down W 37th Street in Central Austin, to take in the holiday light display this street has been entertaining crowds with, for over 20 years.  Every year, homeowners on this tiny block, light up and decorate their homes, trees and everything else in their yards, in the spirit of the season.  The efforts here are purely voluntary – there is no organized committee or neighborhood association driving this.  Holiday spirit alone motivates and inspires 37th street neighbors to welcome the rest of Austin to pay a visit.

W 37th Street Holiday Lights

West 37th Street can be accessed from Guadalupe Street. It is located north of the University of Texas.  The tree lined street is already filled with the character and charm of 1930’s style bungalows. You can drive down the street, but bare in mind, you will be going the pace of the car in front of you, which may be very slow.  The way to take in the holiday display is to find a parking spot and walk.  There are sidewalks on both side of the street and a Starbucks is steps away, for those looking for a nice hot drink for the walk.  One of the houses typically has a band, to provide some additional holiday cheer.
